"Just repair it" isn't always the right answer, and a company that only ever tells you to repair isn't being straight with you. The honest version of this question has a real answer — it depends on the fault, the appliance's age, and what a comparable replacement actually costs in the UAE. Here's the practical version, appliance by appliance.
The real question isn't age — it's this ratio
Age matters, but only because it correlates with something more useful: how much of a new appliance's price you'd be paying to fix the old one. As a rough rule, if a repair quote lands at 40–50% or more of what a comparable new unit costs, replacement usually wins — especially if it's a second major repair within 12 months. Below that line, repair almost always makes more financial sense, regardless of age.
Cost comparison, by appliance
| Appliance | Typical repair cost | Typical new unit cost | Repair usually wins when... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washing Machine | AED 150–450 | AED 1,100–1,600 | Pump, belt, or seal fault, under 8 years old |
| Refrigerator | AED 200–1,200 | AED 1,500–5,000+ | Relay, thermostat, or door seal fault, any age |
| Dishwasher | AED 100–450 | AED 800–2,000+ | Latch, seal, or drain pump fault, any age |
| Oven | AED 200–400+ | AED 1,500–3,500+ | Heating element or door seal fault, any age |

The pattern across all four: seal, latch, relay, and pump-level faults are small relative to replacement cost and almost always worth repairing, whatever the appliance's age. Compressor, motor, and control board faults are where the math shifts — those are the repairs worth comparing against a new unit's price before committing, particularly on anything already 8+ years old.
A control board quote isn't automatically a replace signal
A 3-year-old washing machine with a AED 250 pump replacement is an easy repair call — that's a small fraction of the AED 1,100–1,600 a mid-range replacement costs. An 8-year-old machine quoted AED 900 for a control board is a genuinely different decision, especially if it's had another repair in the past year — at that point you're paying most of a new machine's price to extend an aging one. Same logic on a fridge: a AED 300 start relay fault on a 4-year-old unit is an easy yes; a AED 1,000+ compressor replacement on a 12-year-old fridge is worth comparing against a new mid-range unit first.
UAE-specific factors that change the calculation
- Premium brand parts cost more — but so does premium brand replacement. A Miele or Bosch control board runs higher than a mass-market equivalent, but a new Miele or Bosch costs proportionally more too, so the repair-vs-replace ratio often stays similar to a budget brand rather than tipping toward replacement.
- Villa vs. apartment disposal logistics. Disposing of a large appliance is more involved from an apartment than a villa with direct street access — worth factoring into the decision, not just the sticker price of a new unit.
- Relocating or leaving the UAE soon. If a move is likely within the appliance's remaining useful life, a cheap repair to bridge the gap is often the better call over a full replacement you won't get long-term value from.
- Warranty status. If the appliance is still under a manufacturer or developer warranty, that changes the math entirely — a warranty claim can make an otherwise expensive repair effectively free. Worth checking before paying for a private repair.
When we'll tell you to replace instead of repair
On any of our service pages, the honest answer is the same one we give on-site: for a genuine compressor, motor, or major board failure on a unit already well past the typical service life for its category — 10-15 years for a fridge, 8+ years for most other appliances — we'll say so plainly rather than repair it anyway. A fixed price confirmed after diagnosis, before any work starts, means there's no incentive on our side to push a repair that doesn't make sense for you.
